The Cosmos Reassures Us

Uncategorized

Creation tells us that God is with us

and He can be trusted.

I found myself, along with so many others, watching in awe as the Artemis II mission came to a triumphant conclusion just over a week ago. The Orion spacecraft carried four astronauts on a ten-day journey around the Moon and safely back to Earth, the first deep-space mission since 1972. People across the globe have been following along, captivated not only by the voyage itself, but also by the reflections shared after the crew’s return.

In one update, the crew members remarked, “We are seeing things that are beautiful beyond comprehension.” The expedition undoubtedly sparked conversations about God and faith. In fact, one astronaut, who described himself as “not really religious,” recently reached out to a Navy chaplain, surprised by the weight of his feelings. The only explanation he could give for his experience was “otherworldly.”

In Psalm 19:1-3, we read:

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.

The cosmos communicates God’s majesty and authority to all humanity. General revelation, as seen in creation, is a glorious way through which God speaks to mankind. This revelation not only provides evidence for God’s existence, but also leaves everyone “without excuse” (Rom. 1:19-20). The predictability and order of nature reflect the unchanging nature of God. Just as night turns to day, seasons continue to change, and tides ebb and flow, so God is steadfast and sure.

Even when the world seems unstable, the cosmos tells us that there is coherence and stability beyond what we may immediately see or understand.

Still, this world can seem so evil and unstable- war, political unrest, social conflict, economic insecurity, mental health problems – are just some of the troubles we face on a global scale. On top of that are the multitude of personal struggles that consume our days. Amid what can often seem so confusing and chaotic, we may begin to question if God is doing anything at all.

Recalling the words of the Psalmist helps us to shift our focus and expand our perspective. They point us to the Creator, reminding us of His reign and rule and reassuring us of His power and presence. If God holds the sun, moon and stars in place, then He also controls what happens here on earth. Even when things don’t seem to make sense, creation is a witness to God’s character and the truth of His Word. It offers us an invitation to notice, believe and hope in something that endures.

Hannah Anderson writes, “In God’s wisdom, the entire earth—from the seasons, to the skies, to the sandy beaches—teaches us something about His nature.”

Creation tells us that God is with us and He can be trusted.

The next time you wonder if God is really in control, quiet your heart and look up. You don’t have to carry the burden alone. You don’t have to be over overwrought or overwhelmed. The heavens continue to speak. The promises God gave us remain.

For those who hope in God, we have known it all along. We are still held in a world sustained by the Creator.

And for today, that is enough.

I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God;  I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun  and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things. Isaiah 45:5-7
